Carbon Steel

CARBON STEEL

A steel whose properties are determined primarily by the amount of carbon present. These steels rely on the carbon content for their structure. Apart from iron and carbon, manganese up to 1.5% may be present as well as residual amounts of alloying elements such as nickel, chromium, molybdenum, etc. Most of the steel produced in the world is carbon steel.

Carbon Products: Beams, Channels, Angles, Rails, Tees, Hot Rolled Bars, Cold Finished Bars, Plates, Floor Plates, Hot Rolled & Hot Rolled Pickled and Oiled Sheets, Cold Rolled Sheets, Coated Sheets, Tubing, Structural Tubing, and Pipe.

GUIDE TO SELECTION

STRUCTURAL SHAPES

ANGLES – Bar size and structural size angles of equal and unequal legs for general structural use with a 36 KSI minimum yield.

CHANNELS – Bar size A36/SA36 can be used for all purpose structural applications requiring small sections. C channels (standard) for general purposes are stocked as A36/SA36. These are also certified to the bridge specification A709. Jr. channels are light weight, for stair stingers but can be used for many applications where light structural steel is required. These are certified to A36/SA36.

BEAMS – Standard beams are produced to A36/SA36. Wide flange is dual certified grade 50 to A572 and A992. M beams, Jr., H, or light are certified to A36/SA36.

HOT ROLLED SHEET

COMMERCIAL STEEL - CS Type B is a low cost steel sheet, soft enough to bend flat on itself in any direction without cracking, ductile enough for shallow drawing. Carbon is .10 max. for improved welding and forming. Surface has normal mill oxide. Conforms to A1011 (formerly A569). Used for tanks, barrels, farm implements, and other applications where surface finish is not critical.

PICKLED AND OILED - Acid pickling removes mill oxide, improving surface appearance, uniformity, and finishing quality. Paint and enamel adhere well after cleaning. Same properties and forming characteristics as commercial steel but less wear on tooling. Conforms to A1011 (formerly A569). Typical applications: auto and truck parts, farm implements, tanks, stamped and roll-formed parts, formed sections.

 COLD ROLLED SHEET

LOW CARBON (COMMERCIAL STEEL) – Closer thickness tolerances and better surface than pickled and oiled. The matte finish is ideal for paints, enamels and lacquers. Soft enough to bend flat on itself in any direction without cracking. Ductile enough to for many moderate drawing applications. Can be electroplated. Light oil protects surface from rust. Conforms to a1008 (formerly ASTM A366). Maximum carbon content .10 for improved welding and forming. End uses: refrigerators, ranges, washing machines, auto and truck bodies, signs, panels, shelving, furniture and stamped parts.

PLATING QUALITY - Two finishes suitable for most plating applications: Commercial Bright, rolled with ground and polished rolls, has a relatively bright finish; and Extra Light Matte, produced with lightly blasted rolls, has a slightly duller finish that Commercial Bright. Base metal conforms to A1008 (formerly ASTM A366).

BARS

COLD FINISHED CARBON STEEL BARS – These are general and special purposes steels widely used for a variety of job requirements.

LOW CARBON – CASE HARDENING

A36 (HR) – Bars designed for use in structural applications. Minimum mechanical properties of 36 KSI yield strength and 58 to 80 KSI tensile strength. Conforms to ASTM A36.

1018, 1020 (HR, CF) – A low carbon steel with a medium manganese content. Has good case hardening properties, fair machinability. Readily brazed and welded. Suitable for shafting and for applications that do not required the greater strength of high carbon and alloy steels. Conforms to ASTM A108.

1117 (HR, CF) – A low carbon, high manganese steel. Machinability is greatly improved over 1018, and case hardening is deep and uniform, supported by a touch ductile core. Withstands bending, broaching, and most deforming without cracking. Conforms to ASTM A108.

11L17 (HR, CF) – The addition of .15 to .35% lead to the 1117 analysis provided for even faster machining without changing the excellent case hardening characteristics. Conforms to ASTM A108.

M1020 (HR) - A low carbon, general purpose, merchant quality steel, produced to wider carbon and manganese ranges than standard steels. Suitable for forming and welding.

MEDIUM CARBON – DIRECT HARDENING

1035 (HR) – An intermediate carbon, special quality machinery steel, higher in strength and hardness than a low carbon steel. Used for studs and bolts.

1040, 1045 (HR, CF) – Medium carbon steels used when greater strength and hardness is desired in the as-rolled condition. Can be hammer forged and responds to heat treatment. Suitable for flame and induction hardening. Uses include gears, shafts, axles, bolts and studs, machine parts, etc.

M1044 (HR) – Merchant quality steel is similar to SAW 1045, but less costly. Contains lesser amounts of manganese (.25/.60); strength and responsiveness to heat treatment are approximately the same.

1050 (CF) – Strain hardened, stress relieved material which offers 100 KSI yield strength. Improved strength over 1045. Conforms to ASTM A311.

1141 (HR, CF) - A medium carbon, special quality, manganese steel with improved machinability and better heat treatment response (surface hardness is deeper and more uniform) than plain carbon steels. Good as-rolled strength and toughness. Uses include gears, shafts, axles, bolts, studs, pins, etc.

11L41 (HR, CF) – Has all the desirable characteristics of 141 plus greatly superior machinability due to .025%/0.35% lead addition.

1144 (HR, CF) – Similar to 1141 with slightly higher carbon and sulfur content resulting in superior machinability and improved response to heat treating. Often used for induction hardened parts requiring 55RC surface.

1144 A311 CL.B (CF) – Steel bars with 100 KSI minimum yield. Capable of flame hardening to 56-60 R.D. for such applications as piston rods. Conforms to ASTM A311.

STRESSPROOF (CF) – High strength without heat treatment. Stress relived. Readily machinable with minimum distortion. Conforms to ASTM A31, CL.B.

FATIGUE-PROOF (CF) – Higher strength than Stressproof achieved by mechanical working and thermal treatment. Eliminates need for heat treating and secondary operations (cleaning, straightening, etc.). Readily machinable with low residual stresses.

TUBING AND PIPE

COLD DRAWN SEAMLESS – Made from 1026 (UNS G10260) steel in sizes through 9 ½” OD, from .28 maximum carbon steel in sizes over 9 ½” OD. Produced to OD and ID dimensions, except as noted in size listing. Furnished in a “as drawn” condition. Cold drawn seamless offers good surface quality and increased mechanical properties over hot finished seamless tubing. Meets ASTM A519. Common lengths are 17 t 24 feet.

HOT FINISHED SEAMLESS – Made from 1026 (UNS G10260) steel, it is lower in cost than cold drawn and most applicable where precise dimensions ad surface quality are of secondary importance. As an industry standard, HF seamless is manufactured to OD and wall dimensions. Meets ASTM A519. Common lengths are 17 to 24 feet.

DOM (DRAWN-OVER-MANDREL) – Cold drawn electric resistance welded tube with all flash removed. Each tube is tested for soundness of weld. Preferred over seamless tubing for its excellent OD and ID concentricity. Normalizing and cold drawing over a mandrel makes DOM a uniform and precision product. Made from 1020 (UNS G10200) steel in walls 10 gauge and lighter, from 1026 (UNS G10260) steel in walls heavier than 10 gauge. Furnished in “as drawn” condition. Manufactured to OD and ID dimensions except as noted. Meets ASTM A513 Type 5. Common lengths are 17 to 24 feet.

BUTTWELD – Produced from continuous welded pipe. Does not offer the inherent strength in the weld are of an electric resistance welded product. Made from low carbon SRA steel. Machinability and mechanical properties are reduced as a result of lower carbon content. Meets ASTM A512. Common lengths are 17 to 24 feet.

ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE WELDED – Produced from low carbon steel. Tubing with walls heavier than 18 gauge is produced from hot rolled steel; tubing with walls 18 gauge and lighter is produced from cold rolled steel. Furnished as “as-welded) condition. OD flash removed on all sizes. For round tubing 1” OD and larger ID flash controlled to .010” to .01” (depending on OD). Sizes under 1” OD and all square and rectangles are flash-in. ERW is the lowest cost of all mechanical tubing. Manufactured to OD and wall dimensions. Meets ASTM A513 Type 1(HR) or Type 2 (CR). Common lengths are 20 foot random lengths.
